Major Exploration and the Process of Career Identity Reconstruction among Adult Learners in an Undeclared Major Program
This study explored the contexts of university entry, experiences of major exploration, and career identity reconstruction among adult learners with work experience enrolled in an undeclared major program. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted with nine students in an undeclared major program within a college for adult learners at a university in Seoul, and the data were analyzed using grounded theory analytic procedures. Participants questioned whether their current career paths would lead to their desired forms of work and life and sought to reassess their positions and future possibilities through higher education. They viewed the undeclared major program as an institutional option that allowed them to defer major choice and explore multiple possibilities. After entering university, they used coursework to identify their interests and learning preferences and to envision possible vocational selves and career directions. Supported by relational ties and peer solidarity, they used generative AI and online sources for reflection and information gathering, while reviewing job postings and drawing on coursework to assess career feasibility and major fit. Through this process, they re-evaluated their current work, reinterpreted prior career experiences, clarified their desired areas of expertise, and strengthened their agency in career decision-making while continuing to negotiate their career identities amid uncertainty. The core category was “reconstructing career identity through major exploration.” This study demonstrates that major exploration can function as a lifelong learning process connecting prior work experience with future career possibilities and suggests that an undeclared major program can provide an institutional foundation for career-linked lifelong learning that supports career identity reconstruction.
