The purpose of this study was to explore the criterion-related validity of adaptive-needed competencies among new middle-aged women, a construct derived through qualitative needs analysis, by examining its predictive relationship with life satisfaction. A survey was administered to 102 new middle-aged women who participated in the specialized curriculum of the Gyeonggi Baby Boomer Happiness Campus in 2025. The eight domains of adaptive-needed competencies (relationships/communication, learning/education, pride, health, financial capability, self-confidence, career, and support/encouragement) served as independent variables and life satisfaction as the dependent variable. Hierarchical regression and relative weight analyses were conducted while controlling for demographic variables. The results were as follows. First, learning/education scored the highest and financial capability the lowest among the eight domains, and all eight domains were significantly and positively correlated with life satisfaction. Second, even after controlling for age, education level, household economic level, and employment status, adaptive-needed competencies significantly predicted life satisfaction, accounting for an additional 60.3% of the variance. Third, in terms of relative contribution, support/encouragement showed the highest relative weight and learning/education the lowest. These findings suggest that the qualitatively derived construct of adaptive-needed competencies demonstrates exploratory criterion-related validity with respect to life satisfaction, and that lifelong education programs for the new middle-aged should embed elements that strengthen emotional support and self-efficacy beyond knowledge transmission. Because the study relied on cross-sectional self-report data from participants in a single program at a single site, the results should be interpreted as exploratory rather than confirmatory.
