Generative AI Education Experience and Learning Self-Efficacy among Adolescents : Mediating Effects of Generative AI Literacy and Implications for Digital Risk Management
This study examined the relationship between generative AI education experience and learning self-efficacy among adolescents, focusing on the parallel multiple mediating effects of generative AI literacy subcompetencies and differences by school level. Data were drawn from the Study on Adolescents’ Use of Generative AI and Strategies for Enhancing Literacy conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute. The analysis included 3,959 middle and high school students with prior experience using generative AI. Generative AI literacy was divided into four subcompetencies: critical evaluation, communication, creative use, and ethical use. Gender, academic achievement, and perceived economic status were included as control variables. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were conducted using SPSS 29.0, and parallel multiple mediation analysis and multi-group path analysis by school level were performed using Mplus 8.8 with standardized survey weights and the robust maximum likelihood estimator. The results showed that generative AI education experience was positively associated with all four generative AI literacy subcompetencies and learning self-efficacy. The four subcompetencies were also positively associated with learning self-efficacy, and both the specific indirect effects through each subcompetency and the total indirect effect were statistically significant. The indirect effects through ethical use and communication were relatively larger, while the direct path between generative AI education experience and learning self-efficacy remained significant, indicating a pattern of statistical partial mediation. Although some differences in statistical significance were observed across school levels, the differences in the major structural paths and specific indirect effects between middle and high school students were not statistically significant. These findings suggest that generative AI education should move beyond technical skills and integrate critical evaluation of information, effective communication, creative use, and ethical and responsible use. They also highlight the need to incorporate digital risk management into adolescent AI education, including information reliability, privacy protection, copyright compliance, and responsible use of AI-generated content.
