How Platform Algorithms Subvert the Order of Desire - A Practical Theological Study Based on Augustine’s Ordo Amoris
This study analyzes how the order of human desire is inverted within platform environments through Augustine’s concept of ordo amoris and proposes a theoretical framework for its reorientation. Christian theology has maintained that human desire ought to be rightly ordered toward God, and Augustine’s ordo amoris provides a normative framework for explaining both the distortion and restoration of this order. Accordingly, this study first examines the theological meaning of desire and ordo amoris, and then systematizes desire formation through four analytical axes: orientation·hierarchy, relation, attention·rhythm, and habituation·embodiment. The study further argues that platform algorithms function not merely as technological tools but as formative structures that shape desire. Through datafication·profiling, curation·connection, control·discipline, and monetization, platform environments redirect desire toward responsiveness and performance, reorganize the hierarchy of love around visibility and efficiency, and transform relationships into structures of comparison and mobilization. They also reshape attention from sustained reflection toward immediate response and repetitive stimulation, while repeated patterns become embodied as increasingly automatic habits and dispositions. In response to this inversion, the study proposes a framework for the reordering of desire toward caritas. This framework begins with reorientation by the Holy Spirit and integrates the weight of love, the movement of outside→inside→above, and the Beatitudes in Augustine’s exposition of the Sermon on the Mount. By connecting the inversion and reorientation of desire within a single framework, this study interprets desire formation in the platform age as a theological and formative problem shaped by technological environments and repeated practices, and seeks to provide a normative foundation for practical theology in the platform age.
