Workplace Theology in the Age of AI and Humanoid Robots : A Study Based on the Theories of Bruno Latour and Anne Foerst
This paper aims to explore new directions for workplace theology and workplace ministry in an era in which AI has emerged as a significant actor in labor. To date, Protestant theology of work has primarily understood the meaning of labor through the lens of vocation or explained its theological significance within the redemptive-historical framework of creation-fall-redemption-new creation. However, the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), humanoid robots, and digital platforms in the twenty-first century is fundamentally reshaping human labor and the workplace. In particular, the proliferation of generative AI and autonomous decision-making systems is transforming labor from mere productive activity or vocational performance into a relational practice jointly constituted by humans and technology. These changes raise new theological challenges that cannot be adequately addressed by existing anthropocentric theologies of work alone. To overcome these limitations, this paper seeks to reconstruct a workplace theology for the AI era, drawing theoretically on Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and Anne Foerst’s theology of AI. Latour understands reality not as a hierarchical order centered on human beings, but as a network in which human and nonhuman actors interact with one another and form relationships. Foerst, meanwhile, understands the purpose of AI research within this relational network as contributing to a deeper understanding of humanity. Both thinkers are critical of modern anthropocentrism and reject approaches that either place technology within anthropocentric frameworks or define technology primarily in terms of competition with human beings. This paper understands labor in the AI era as a relational practice in which humans, technology, organizations, and creation participate together. It further reinterprets labor as a process of translation among co-creators. Accordingly, this paper does not limit labor to the categories of wage labor or vocation. It understands AI and humanoid robots not as replacements for human beings but as new actors participating in God’s creation. Labor can therefore be redefined as a process of relationship-building through which humans and technology together care for God’s creation and pursue the common good of the kingdom of God. This paper seeks to expand existing vocation-centered workplace theology toward a relational paradigm. The significance of this study lies in the theological reconstruction of the meaning of labor in the AI era and in proposing a new paradigm for the public mission of the church.
