The Potential Influence of Recommendation Algorithms on Personal Self-Narrative Construction : A Narrative Identity-Based Literature Review Centered on YouTube and Shorts with Christian Reflection
The purpose of this study is to examine how recommendation algorithms operating on YouTube and Shorts may intervene in the construction of personal self-narratives from the perspective of narrative identity and to reflect critically on this process within Christian anthropology and practical theology. Digital platforms today function not merely as channels of information delivery but as interpretive environments that organize the order of attention, topics of repeated exposure, intensities of emotion, and contexts through which users interpret both the world and themselves. Although users appear to be active subjects choosing content, they may also be influenced to reread themselves and assign significance to particular experiences and emotions within the arrangements of interest and affective rhythms provided by recommendation systems. This study first analyzes the basic operation of YouTube recommendation systems and short-form platforms and examines how personalization, repeated exposure, engagement optimization, and contextual compression shape users’ interpretive environments. It then connects studies of the algorithmized self and digital self-formation with theories of narrative identity, arguing that algorithms may function not merely as devices reflecting preexisting preferences but as mediating environments that selectively reinforce conditions of self-narrative construction, including memory, affective tone, and future expectations. Drawing particularly on McAdams and McLean’s theory of narrative identity and Ricoeur’s account of narrative self-understanding, the study analyzes the selection of memory, emotional interpretation, future expectation, and narrative integration and proposes four pathways through which algorithmic environments may intervene in self-narratives: the thematization of attention, reinforcement of affect, compression of context, and outsourcing of self-understanding. Finally, from a Christian perspective, human beings are not products of algorithmic optimization but persons created in the image of God and called to understand themselves in relation to God, neighbors, and community. Therefore, churches, pastoral counseling, and Christian education must move beyond simple restrictions on digital use toward practices that discern attention and desire, reinterpret fragmented memories within the larger narrative of the gospel, and reconstruct self-narratives through communal testimony and repeated practices of faith. By integrating algorithm studies, narrative identity theory, and Christian anthropology, this study proposes a provisional practical-theological conceptual model of human formation in the digital platform age and provides a theoretical foundation for subsequent empirical research and pastoral application.
