This study aims to offer an educational-theological critique of the challenges posed by algorithm-driven digital platform environments to Christian faith formation, drawing on Charles Taylor’s analysis of secularity, particularly his concepts of the immanent frameand the buffered self. For Taylor, secularity signifies not the decline of religion but a transformation in the conditions under which faith is experienced. The immanent frame refers to the sense that the world can be adequately understood and interpreted without reference to transcendence, while the buffered self denotes the modern subject whose openness to external calls has become structurally restricted. This study conceptualizes the platform condition in which predictive personalization, ranking, recommendation, instant response, and infinite-feed structures anticipate users’ responses prior to their own processes of searching and interpretation as algorithmic immediacy. It defines algorithmic immediacy as a formative force that reorganizes human cognition, the experience of time, desire, and relationality around immediate response and consumption. In this account, algorithms are not treated simply as a cause of secularity but as a technological mediation that naturalizes and habituates an already established immanent frame at the level of everyday perception and practice. Algorithmic immediacy operates through three interrelated mechanisms: the structuring of reactivity, which reorganizes cognitive activity around modes of response; predictive personalization, which encloses the self within a self-confirming information environment; and the management of lack, which reduces the space in which longing for transcendence may emerge. Together, these mechanisms reconfigure not so much the “content” of faith itself as the “conditions” under which faith is formed. Consequently, the three key dimensions of faith formation identified in this study—temporality, relationality, and orientation toward transcendence—may be fundamentally weakened. As an educational-theological response, this study proposes the recovery of receptivity and discernment, the recovery of narrative education that enables learners to interpret themselves within the biblical metanarrative of creation, fall, redemption, and consummation, and the recovery of discipleship through worship and communal practices. These practices are understood as forms of counter-formationthat resist algorithmic immediacy by redirecting human desire toward the Kingdom of God. As a theoretical and educational-theological study based on literature analysis, this study does not seek to empirically establish the effects of algorithmic environments on faith formation; rather, its significance lies in offering a conceptual framework and a critical orientation for interpreting this phenomenon.

본 연구는 알고리즘 기반의 디지털 플랫폼 환경이 기독교 신앙 형성에 야기하는 위기를 찰스 테일러(Charles Taylor)의 세속성 분석, 곧 ‘내재적 틀’(immanent frame)과 ‘완충된 자아’(buffered self) 개념을 이론적 자원으로 삼아 교육신학적으로 비판하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 테일러에게 세속성은 종교의 쇠퇴가 아니라 신앙이 경험되는 조건의 전환을 뜻하며, 내재적 틀은 초월 없이도 세계가 충분히 이해되고 해석된다는 감각을, 완충된 자아는 외부 부름에 대한 개방성이 구조적으로 차단된 근대적 주체를 말한다. 본 연구는 예측 개인화, 순위화, 추천, 즉각 응답, 무한 피드 구조를 통해 사용자의 탐색과 해석 이전에 반응을 선취하는 플랫폼적 조건을 ‘알고리즘적 즉각성’(algorithmic immediacy)으로 개념화하여 이를 인간의 인식, 시간 경험, 욕망과 관계 방식을 즉각적 반응과 소비 중심으로 재편하는 형성적 힘으로 규정한다. 이때 알고리즘은 단순히 세속성의 원인이 아니라, 이미 형성된 내재적 틀을 일상의 지각과 습관 수준에서 자연화하고 체화시키는 기술적 매개로 분석된다. 알고리즘적 즉각성은 인지 행위를 반응의 양식으로 재편하는 반응성의 구조화, 자아를 자기 확인적 정보 환경 안에 가두는 예측 개인화, 초월을 향한 갈망의 여백을 축소하는 결핍의 관리라는 세 기제를 통해 작동하며, 이 기제들은 상호 결합하여 신앙의 ‘내용’ 자체보다 신앙이 형성되는 ‘조건’ 자체를 재구성하는 방향으로 작동한다. 그 결과로서 본 연구가 신앙 형성의 핵심 차원으로 설정한 시간성, 관계성, 초월 지향성이 근본적으로 약화된다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 이에 대한 교육신학적 응답으로 수용성과 분별의 회복, 창조-타락-구속-완성의 대서사 속에서 자기 해석을 돕는 서사적 교육의 회복, 예배와 공동체적 훈련을 통한 제자도의 회복을 제안하며, 이를 알고리즘적 즉각성에 맞서 욕망의 방향을 하나님 나라로 재지향하는 ‘대항 형성’(counter-formation)의 실천으로 규정한다. 본 연구는 문헌 분석에 기초한 이론적·교육신학적 연구로서, 알고리즘 환경이 신앙 형성에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 확정하기보다 그 현상을 해석할 개념적 틀과 비판의 방향을 제시하는 데 의의가 있다.
