Treatment for Resolving Relationship Fixation in Adult Relationship Addiction : Focusing on Freud’s Theory of the Body and Libido
This study aims to analyze the formation and maintenance of relationship fixation in adult relationship addiction from the perspective of Freud’s theory of the body and libido and to explore therapeutic approaches for its resolution. In contemporary society, relationship addiction has emerged as a significant issue characterized by excessive dependence and obsession toward a particular person, resulting in the loss of autonomy and psychological independence. Previous studies have primarily explained relationship addiction through the perspectives of attach ment theory, self-differentiation, and emotional regulation; however, psychoanalytic approaches addressing the deeper dynamics of relationship fixation have remained relatively limited. Accordingly, this study examines the unconscious structure of relationship addiction based on Freud’s theory of the body and libido. The findings indicate that relationship fixation is maintained through unresolved libidinal fixation, the relational dynamics of object-seeking and repetition compulsion, and a persistent sense of bodily deprivation. Such fixation tends to weaken ego boundaries, generate identity confusion, and reinforce emotional dependence and recurring anxiety. Furthermore, excessive concentration of libidinal energy on a particular object was found to distort realistic perceptions of relationships, leading individuals to perceive the other person as an idealized object capable of fulfilling their inner deficiencies. Consequently, relationship addiction can be understood not merely as an attachment problem but as a product of libidinal fixation and repetition compulsion directed toward a specific object. In addition, this study proposes several therapeutic directions for resolving relationship fixation, including insight into unconscious deprivation, recognition of repetition compulsion, restoration of healthy ego boundaries, and reinvestment of fixated libido. In particular, it suggests that redirecting libidinal energy concentrated on a specific object toward ego development and self-actualization constitutes a central therapeutic task. Ultimately, recovery from relationship addiction involves more than reducing dependence on another person; it entails fostering autonomous and mature object relations. The significance of this study lies in its reinterpretation of relationship addiction from the perspective of libidinal dynamics and its presentation of the potential for a psychoanalytic treat- ment model aimed at resolving relationship fixation.
