The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth examination of the complex theological and psychological mechanisms underlying contemporary Christians' reliance on shamanism through the Old Testament case of King Saul, and to propose practical pastoral counseling and care approaches applicable to ministry settings. In contemporary Korean society, shamanism has expanded rapidly through new media and popular culture, increasingly being accepted among Christians—including the younger generation—as cultural content and an alternative form of psychological counseling. This study adopts a multidisciplinary case study approach integrating theology, contemporary psychology, and psychiatry to examine the process of Saul's reliance on shamanism from a pastoral counseling perspective. The analysis reveals that Saul's reliance on shamanism operated through a sequential mechanism: an unresolved "need for approval" became an idol of the heart, severing his relationship with God; this rupture triggered severe abandonment anxiety and fear, which subsequently led to psychopathological breakdown and ultimately culminated in seeking out a medium. Based on these findings, this study proposes three core pastoral counseling practices: First, pastors and counselors need to explore the underlying "idols of the heart" and core motivations. Second, they should provide appropriate referrals of professional clinical institutions when necessary. Third, they should help direct anxiety and fear toward spiritual maturity, fostering the restoration of a personal relationship with God and sanctification. This study holds academic and pastoral significance by organically integrating theology, psychology, and psychiatry to provide a holistic understanding of believers' reliance on shamanism and establishing a foundation for practical pastoral counseling. For future research, this study suggests conducting qualitative and quantitative investigations with contemporary Christians to further advance an empirical pastoral counseling framework.
