Emotions construct meaning, trigger behavior, and regulate limited bodily resources. To understand human experience, it is necessary to examine not only cognition and desires concerning events but also the emotions experienced in the process. Emotions are intentional activities through which humans respond to specific objects or situations, encompassing cognitive interpretations and evaluative judgments. The purpose of this study is to present a pastoral-theological reflection aimed at understanding human emotional experiences and applying this understanding to the practice of pastoral counseling. This study provides an overview of contemporary research on emotions, examines the definition of emotion, emotional clarity, and the relationship between emotional awareness and emotion regulation, and explores the significance of recognizing and expressing one’s own emotions for human change and growth. Emotional clarity influences one’s ability to understand and regulate changes in emotional states, while the recognition and expression of emotions are linked to understanding one’s experiences and discovering possibilities for change. Through counseling cases in which counselees struggle to identify and express their subjective emotional experiences, this study emphasizes the need for pastoral counselors to understand and attend to their counselees’ emotions. In pastoral counseling, attending to feelings, physical reactions, sense of purpose, and expressive behaviors together helps counselees discover the internal motivation that enables necessary change. Pastoral counselors need to explore ways to support counselees in interpreting and regulating their emotions based on an understanding of emotion. The findings highlight several key tasks in emotional care: enhancing emotional clarity, refining emotional differentiation, accepting negative emotions and correcting punitive theology, and understanding emotions as a resource for human flourishing. Emotions contribute to human well-being and flourishing and serve as a resource for discerning good from evil and fostering a good life in God. This understanding can lead to pastoral care that helps people of faith shape their identity, gain new insights into their experiences, and imagine a possible future within their faith. Therefore, pastoral counseling as emotional care—helping people accept and express a variety of emotions rather than suppressing or excluding negative emotions—is important not only for the transformation and growth of people of faith but also for the formation of a healthy faith community.
