The purpose of this study is to critique the ethos of boundary-making within Christian communities in an age in which exclusionary logic is pervasive and to illuminate the tradition of hospitality found in the Bible, thereby proposing the practice of hospitality as part of the church’s public responsibility. Modern society has formed mutually complementary relationships based on an ethic of coexistence that recognizes individual autonomy and acknowledges and respects others as equal persons. Since the transition to an industrial society in the nineteenth century, however, humanity has increasingly subordinated individuals to the logic of market competition and efficiency, thereby contributing to its own isolation. As a result, social solidarity has weakened, and the public value of coexistence has been significantly diminished. Behind the erosion of publicness lies the persistent problem of excluding the other. The deteriorating right to survival of socially vulnerable groups, including migrant workers, refugees, and people living in poverty, is one manifestation of this problem. Hospitality is an essential virtue for human society because it transforms relationships characterized by exclusion and violence into relationships grounded in goodwill and trust. At the heart of Christian life is the hospitality of the cross of Jesus Christ, who unconditionally embraced even those considered utterly beyond inclusion. For the Christian community, therefore, hospitality is not an option but an essential virtue that must be practiced. This study presents hospitality as a core dimension of public spirituality that breaks down social boundaries and makes visible the justice of the kingdom of God. On this basis, it identifies the church’s public responsibility to recognize the other as a neighbor with whom life is to be shared and to pursue coexistence in contexts where boundaries and exclusion prevail, thereby proposing hospitality as a communal value and practice. A distinctive feature of this study is its integration of the biblical foundations of hospitality with Henri Nouwen’s concept of paradoxical hospitality and Letty M. Russell’s understanding of just hospitality into the concepts of ontological hospitality and open hospitality. Furthermore, by bringing together Pohl’s practical hospitality, Miroslav Volf’s inclusive hospitality, and Russell’s solidarity of justice as practical foundations, this study proposes solidaristic hospitality as a way of living with others across differences in a global context. The contribution of this study lies in transforming hospitality, a key concept constitutive of Christian identity, into a practical guide for resisting exclusionary attitudes and a spiritual alternative for restoration and coexistence. Nevertheless, further research is needed to explore in greater detail how the virtues of hospitality proposed in this study can be developed beyond the individual level into institutional and political practices. Ultimately, this study seeks to guide Christian communities in an age of anxiety and uncertainty toward a life of coexistence in which they step beyond themselves, cross social boundaries into the world of the other, and experience healing and abundant life together with others within God’s hospitality.
