The purpose of this study is to present a film retreat based on the practical spirituality of John Cassian as an integrative model of contemporary spiritual direction. Cassian presents a structure of spiritual growth that moves from practice to contemplation. For him, the practical stage (praktike) is the process of discerning and purifying the vices within the human heart in order to attain purity of heart (puritas cordis), and purity of heart is the prerequisite for contemplation (theoria) directed toward God. This study focuses on this structure and applies the understanding and discernment of inner problems as a major organizing principle for a film retreat spiritual direction model. Cassian understands the problems of the human interior within the structure of the eight principal vices. Modern psychology also regards unresolved inner problems as obstacles to therapy and growth, and explains them through concepts such as shadow, persona, and defense mechanisms. Accordingly, this study examines the structure of inner vices by focusing on anger, sadness, and acedia among Cassian’s eight principal vices, and understands this structure in connection with the modern psychological concepts of shadow, persona, and defense mechanisms. On this basis, this study constructs a film-retreat spiritual-direction model that integrates film viewing, emotion-discernment training, reading, expressive writing, and psalm-based prayer of entrustment into a journey in which participants discern and purify the structures of inner vices and self-deception and entrust themselves to God. In this model, film functions as a medium that helps participants project and reflect upon their inner lives from a relatively safe distance. Through the activities of “naming emotions” and the “thought basket,” emotion-discernment training helps participants notice and verbalize the emotions and thoughts evoked by the film more concretely, and examine the structure of self-deception and the roots and direction of recurring emotional patterns revealed within them. Expressive writing puts into words emotions and experiences that had not yet come to light or had remained vague, turning them into objects that can be observed and discerned. Reading helps participants understand them anew before God and make meaning of them. Psalm-based prayer of entrustment leads participants to bring this discerned and reconstructed inner content before God and entrust it to Him. Here, discernment, purification, and entrustment do not proceed as a linear sequence but form an interconnected and cyclical process of gradual spiritual growth that extends into spiritual training in daily life. Therefore, this study suggests that a film retreat based on Cassian’s practical spirituality can function as an integrative model of spiritual direction for believers today.

본 연구의 목적은 존 카시안(John Cassian)의 실천 영성에 기초한 영화 피정을 현대 영성지도의 통합적 모델로 제시하는 데 있다. 카시안은 실천에서 관상으로 나아가는 영적 성장 구조를 제시한다. 그에게 실천적 단계(praktike)는 인간 내면의 악덕을 분별하고 정화하여 마음의 순결(puritas cordis)을 지향하는 과정이며, 마음의 순결은 하나님을 향한 관상(theoria)의 전제 조건이다. 본 연구는 이에 주목하여, 인간 내면의 문제를 이해하고 분별하는 것을 영화 피정 영성지도 모델의 주요 구성 원리로 적용하였다. 카시안은 인간 내면의 문제를 여덟 가지 주요 악덕의 구조 안에서 이해한다. 현대 심리학 역시 인간 내면의 해결되지 않은 문제가 치료와 성장을 방해한다고 보며, 이를 그림자·페르소나·방어기제와 같은 개념을 통해 설명한다. 이에 본 연구는 카시안의 여덟 가지 주요 악덕 가운데 분노·슬픔·아케디아를 중심으로 인간 내면의 악덕 구조를 살펴보고, 이를 현대 심리학의 그림자·페르소나·방어기제 개념과 연결하여 이해하였다. 이를 토대로 본 연구는 영화 감상·감정 분별 훈련·독서·표현적 글쓰기·시편 의탁기도를 인간 내면의 악덕과 자기기만의 구조를 분별하고 정화하여 하나님께 의탁하는 여정으로 통합하는 영화 피정 영성지도 모델을 구성하였다. 이 모델에서 영화는 참여자가 비교적 안전한 거리에서 자신의 내면을 투사하고 성찰하도록 돕는 매개로 기능하며, 감정 분별 훈련은 ‘감정에 이름 붙이기’와 ‘생각 바구니’ 활동을 통해 영화가 불러일으킨 감정과 생각을 구체적으로 알아차리고 언어화하여, 그 안에 드러나는 자기기만의 구조와 반복되는 정서 패턴의 근원과 방향을 살피도록 돕는다. 표현적 글쓰기는 미처 드러나지 않았거나 모호하게 머물던 감정과 경험을 글로 표현하여 바라보고 분별할 수 있는 대상으로 만든다. 독서는 이를 하나님 앞에서 새롭게 이해하고 의미화하도록 한다. 시편 의탁기도는 이렇게 분별되고 재구성된 내면의 내용을 하나님께 가져가 맡기도록 이끈다. 이때 분별·정화·의탁은 단선적인 진행이 아닌 서로 연결되고 순환하며 점진적인 영적 성장을 이루는 과정으로서, 일상의 영적 훈련으로까지 확장된다. 따라서 본 연구는 카시안의 실천 영성에 기초한 영화 피정이 오늘날 신자들을 위한 통합적 영성지도 모델로 기능할 수 있음을 제시한다.
