Union beyond Obsession : The Relationship between Addiction and Spiritual Formation Explored through Attachment Theory
This article aims to explore how the experience of addiction can be related to spiritual formation, viewing it from various aspects of attachment theory. Major research methodologies include Gerald May's interpretation of spirituality and addiction, proximity maintenance between human infants and a care giver proposed by John Bowlby, and the relational attachment to God theory of Lee A. Kirkpatrick. The essay defines addiction as a frustration and distortion of desire towards love, and in one's journey of recovering this fundamental longing, we need both psychological and spiritual approaches. According to attachment theory, deep emotional bonds formed with a primary caregiver provide a safe and lifelong survival mechanism to human infants. On the contrary, insecure or disorganized attachment could lead to addictive behaviors such as obsession, anxiety, suppression of feelings, destroying one's relationships with other people and God as well. Recovering from an addiction can be aided by four traditional spiritual practices, which are self-awareness, detachment, spiritual direction, and collective pastoral care. Key contributions of this study are two-fold. First, it delves into the theme of addiction not from a perspective of psychoanalysis or psychotherapy, but from that of spiritual formation. Also, the paper argues that an ultimate form of healing begins by re-discovering the presence and love of God deep within oneself, rather than by behavioral modification itself.
