The Korean Church is facing internal and external crises due to a lack of sanctified living. According to statistical surveys by the Ministry Data Institute, churchgoers aged 30 to 40 are experiencing faith-related conflicts caused by the actions of non-sanctified believers, with approximately 40% of them considering leaving the church within ten years. Regrettably, many Korean churchgoers have fallen into a spiritual slump where hearing sermons and attending worship services no longer strengthen their desire for sanctification. Throughout Christian history, the Desert Monks of the early church devoted themselves to sanctification and experienced remarkable transformations. The stories of their holy lives have been passed down to this day through the sayings of the Desert Fathers, becoming immortal classics that challenge and inspire readers. To be sure, there are discontinuities between the context of the Desert Fathers and 21st-century Korean churchgoers, most notably a life of total poverty, extreme asceticism, and complete silence. However, numerous continuities also exist: Walking with God: A continuous life lived in God's presence. Struggling against human nature: Constant warfare against innate sinful inclinations. Living a life of love: Expressing genuine Christian love to others. Although modern believers may rarely pursue such a life with intensity, these principles remain identical across all times and cultures as the essential goals of faith for beings created in the image of God. In fact, this applies not only to believers but to all human beings created by God; as Bernard of Clairvaux, a medieval mystic of divine love, observed, humans are creatures satisfied only by the highest value. This "highest value" refers to the original image of God within humanity—namely, holiness and altruism—which form the core of a sanctified life. To address this, this paper presents five applicable themes drawn from the sayings of the Desert Fathers for modern believers: 1. Living with simple food and sharing belongings. 2. Avoiding boasting, praise, and envy. 3. Enduring injustice with patience. 4. Refraining from unnecessary speech. 5. Forgiving sinners and avoiding discomforting the vulnerable in the church community. In short, such a life represents a strenuous struggle to obey Jesus's Sermon on the Mount literally. Furthermore, in the 21st century—where we live alongside AI—living this way holds unique significance: it serves as a realm where humans can teach AI the spiritual dimensions of humanity through example.
