In contemporary society, addiction is not confined to particular substances or behaviors; rather, it manifests itself as a structural reality in which recurring patterns of sin and disordered desires come to dominate human life. This study understands addiction not merely as a moral failure, a weakness of will, or a psychological or medical disorder, but as an existential condition in which human desire and will are held captive under the “dominion of sin.” Although addiction may initially begin with human choice, through repeated patterns the individual eventually comes under the domination and bondage of that which once appeared to be an object of choice. Recovery from addiction, therefore, must be understood theologically not simply as the cessation of addictive behavior or the strengthening of willpower, but as a transformation of the governing order that shapes and directs human life. Against this background, this study explores the theological significance and practical application of preaching for addiction recovery, focusing on Thomas C. Oden’s understanding of grace and the integrative perspective of kerygma–therapeia. Oden’s understanding of prevenient and cooperating grace demonstrates that human beings, whose wills have been impaired by sin, cannot free themselves from the bondage of sin through their own strength. Rather, divine grace first calls and awakens them, enabling the restored will to respond to that grace. Accordingly, this study interprets addiction recovery not primarily as a demand for human determination and willpower, but as a process of healing and restoration initiated by God’s sovereign grace. Furthermore, through the integration of kerygma and therapeia, this study defines preaching not merely as instruction or moral exhortation, but as an event of the gospel in which the reign of God, already inaugurated in Jesus Christ, is proclaimed and through which healing and liberation take place. Preaching, therefore, should not be a setting in which those struggling with addiction are urged to exercise greater willpower and determination. Rather, it should be understood as the locus of a transformation of governing order, in which the impaired will, formerly subjected to the dominion of sin, is brought under the new reign of divine grace. On this basis, the study proposes four homiletical approaches: diagnostic preaching that enables individuals to recognize the impaired condition of their will; confessional preaching that leads the inner life of the congregation toward liberation; integrative Kerygma–Therapeia Preaching through which healing and liberation are experienced in the proclamation of the gospel; and community-oriented preaching that extends individual recovery toward the communal restoration of the church. Ultimately, this study seeks to demonstrate that such an integrative approach to preaching can provide both a theological foundation for addiction recovery and pastoral direction for contemporary people caught in recurring patterns of sin and bondage.
