The purpose of this study is to establish Su-un Choe Je-u’s Sicheonju (侍天主) as both the first principle of modern Korean thought and a principle of revolution, and to demonstrate, through the wording of the Cheondogyo Scriptures, that its modernity and its revolutionary character derive together from the single structure of si (侍, bearing and serving), mediated by seong (誠). Sicheonju has commonly been read as a preliminary stage of innaecheon (人乃天). Yet immediately after glossing si, the Nonhangmun glosses ju (主) as “honoring it and serving it together with one’s parents,” and Haewol remembers this gloss as Su-un’s original teaching, unrevealed by the sages of old. So long as this gloss stands, Sicheonju cannot be equated with the proposition that the human being simply is Heaven. This study begins by reading the two glosses together. Methodologically, three interpretive instruments are subordinated to close analysis of the Donggyeong daejeon, the Yongdam yusa, and the Haewol sinsa beopseol: Koselleck’s conceptual history for the semantic shift of seong; Gadamer’s fusion of horizons for the continuity and rupture between Sicheonju and the Confucian conception of Heaven; and Ricoeur’s appropriation for Su-un’s reconfiguration of seong and cheon (天) and the resemanticization of boguk anmin. The study unfolds along three lines. The first is the relocation of seong. The Jwajam and Haewol’s chapter on seong-gyeong-sin declare the three graphs seong, gyeong, and sin to be the whole of the Way, which signifies that the seong of the Zhongyong has moved from a path toward Heaven to a path for keeping the Heaven one already bears. Sin Hang-su’s finding that Su-un’s father Choe Ok inherited both the Yeongnam T’oegye school’s cultivation of seong and gyeong and the statecraft thought of the Gyeonggi Namin shows the soil of this shift. The second is the adjudication of modernity. This study concedes Cha Nam-hee’s objection that Su-un’s conception of Heaven is archaic in character, yet challenges the premise that modernity means rationalization, and characterizes Donghak not as a Korean edition of Western modernity but as an indigenous modernity, whose content is sain yeocheon, hyang’a seorwi, the cultivation of women, and the abolition of status distinctions within the order. The third is the argument for revolutionary character. The study shows that the royalist vocabulary of boguk anmin became revolutionary language through an appropriation that shifted the referent of guk (國) to the community of the people, reads the jipgangso as the institutional realization of that appropriation, and interprets dasi gaebyeok as a temporality of renewal that is neither cyclical nor progressive. The study concludes that the modernity and the revolutionary character of Sicheonju are not two separate properties but the inside and outside of a single principle. If bearing Heaven is a fact of existence, then modernity is the content of that fact, seong is fidelity to it, and revolution is what follows when such fidelity collides with the established order. This finding joins into a single logic the segmentation of previous scholarship, in which studies of seong have been assigned to theories of self-cultivation, studies of modernity to conceptions of the human being, and studies of revolutionary character to the history of practice; it further supplies grounds for a reading that acknowledges the lineage running from Sicheonju through yangcheonju to innaecheon while preserving the differences among its stages. Amid deepening human alienation, ecological crisis, and inequality, Sicheonju can be reilluminated as a philosophical resource for restoring human dignity and the equality of life, yet that resource comes alive only where there is a seong that sustains the bearing of Heaven today.
