The purpose of this study is to explore the educational potential of Donghak for fostering the character development of adolescents. As the theoretical basis of this study, discussions in the field of pedagogy related to youth character education and Donghak were referenced. Donghak ideology, figures, and related texts that help form proper values in youth and support self-understanding and growth were used as subjects for character education. Based on this theoretical foundation, a teaching and learning process plan applying Donghak as a subject for character education in subject education was developed and presented. The main contents of this study are summarized as follows. First, after theoretically examining the necessity and methods of character education applying Donghak, the feasibility of its application in curriculum education was confirmed. Second, to strengthen adolescents’ character competencies, teaching and learning plans applying Donghak as character education material were developed and presented for subject education. In conclusion, character education linked to the curriculum, using Donghak ideology, figures, and related texts as a teaching resource, is judged to have a positive effect on strengthening adolescents’ character competencies. As follow-up studies to promote character education programs utilizing Donghak, the development and operation of experience-centered character education programs by school level and the verification of effects on program participants are suggested.

본 연구의 목적은 청소년의 인성 함양을 위한 동학의 교육적 활용 가능성을 탐색하는 것이다. 본 연구의 이론적 기초로서 청소년 인성교육, 동학과 관련된 교육학계의 논의를 참고하였으며, 청소년의 올바른 가치관 형성, 자기 성장과 이해에 도움이 되는 동학사상·인물·관련 텍스트를 인성교육 제재로 활용하였다. 이론적 토대를 바탕으로 교과교육에서 인성교육 제재로서 동학을 적용한 교수·학습과정안을 개발, 제시하였다. 본 연구의 내용을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 동학을 적용한 인성교육의 방법과 필요성을 이론적으로 살펴본 후 교과 교육에서의 적용 가능성을 확인하였다. 둘째, 청소년의 인성역량 강화를 위하여 교과교육에서 인성교육 제재로서 동학을 적용한 교수·학습과정안을 개발, 예시하였다. 결론적으로 인성교육 제재로서 동학사상·인물·관련 텍스트를 활용한 교과연계 인성교육은 청소년의 인성역량 강화에 긍정적인 교육적 효과가 있을 것으로 판단된다. 동학을 활용한 인성교육 프로그램의 확산을 위한 후속 연구로는 학교급별 체험중심 인성교육 프로그램의 개발 및 운영, 교육프로그램 참여자의 효과 검증을 제안하였다.
