The Effect of Serial Entrepreneurial Experience on Startup Performance : Evidence from the 2025 Startup Enterprise Survey
This study examines the impact of serial entrepreneurial experience on startup performance using data from the 2025 Startup Enterprise Survey (MDIS, Statistics Korea). Serial entrepreneurial experience was operationalized using two metrics the number of startups and by a serial-entrepreneur dummy variable, while startup performance was measured by the natural log of annual sales. The results reveal a statistically significant negative effect of serial entrepreneurial experience on startup performance, contrary to the positively-directed hypothesis derived from human capital theory. This pattern was robust across multiple alternative specifications, including binary indicator, group-comparison, categorical, quadratic, and extended-control-variable models. The findings suggest that serial entrepreneurial experience does not necessarily improve startup performance and provide implications for entrepreneurship support policies.
