The Role of General Education and Universities in the Protection of Basic Academic Disciplines in the Era of Major Autonomous Selection
This study aims to examine the structural risks facing basic academic disciplines amid changes in the higher education environment, including the expansion of the Major Autonomous Selection System and the decline in the college-age population, and to explore protective measures at the levels of general education and university governance to ensure the sustainable maintenance of their educational foundations. To this end, previous studies and policy documents concerning the Major Autonomous Selection System, basic academic disciplines, general education, and the restructuring of academic systems were reviewed, and existing curricular and academic policies were reinterpreted from the perspective of protecting basic academic disciplines. The literature review identified four dimensions of institutional response for the protection of basic academic disciplines: courses, curricula, inter-university resources, and academic structures. These responses can complement one another through stable course provision, coherent learning pathways, inter-university resource sharing, and institutional support for university-wide educational functions. The significance of this study lies in redefining the protection of basic academic disciplines not simply as a matter of preserving departments with small student enrollments, but as a matter of securing an institutional foundation through which the knowledge and modes of inquiry of basic academic disciplines can be continuously taught and reproduced within university curricula and academic structures. The study further suggests that, in the era of the Major Autonomous Selection System, general education should function as a key mediating domain that not only supports students’ academic exploration but also extends and connects the educational functions of basic academic disciplines across the university as a whole.
