The Growth Stories of Students with learning support needs on the Running Track : Exploring School Sports Club Experiences Among Middle Schoolers
Students with learning support needs experience not only academic difficulties but also a complex web of interrelated challenges, including emotional and behavioral issues. Despite this reality, government policies and academic research targeting this group have predominantly focused on narrow, remedial learning activities and outcomes. To address this gap, this study aims to explore the in-depth personal and relational growth experiences of middle school students with learning support needs through their sustained participation in school sports clubs. For this purpose, data were collected through in-depth interviews and document artifacts (drawings and photographs) from six students at 'A' Middle School in Seoul who participated in extracurricular school sports clubs. The collected data were then analyzed using inductive content analysis. The findings reveal that the stories of growth among these students who consistently engaged in school sports clubs encompass two main dimensions: personal growth and relational growth. First, in terms of personal growth, participation fostered holistic development across physical, cognitive, and emotional domains. The students developed active lifestyle habits by awakening to the intrinsic value of physical activity. Furthermore, their cognitive self-efficacy, derived from a newfound sense of physical competence, triggered a cognitive restructuring that allowed them to perceive learning as a challenge they could actively undertake. They also cultivated emotional resilience—using failure as a springboard for retry—thereby building an internal safety mechanism. Second, regarding relational growth, the students strengthened multi-dimensional bonds encompassing peers, teachers, and family members. Through the process of practical cooperation, students who had previously been marginalized were successfully integrated into the social bridges of peer relationships. Their vertical relationship with teachers shifted into horizontal solidarity, which served as a catalyst for active communication regarding their learning. Moreover, sports functioned as a powerful medium for family conversation, bridging emotional distances and laying the groundwork for a transition into mutually supportive family dynamics.
