This study aims to explore the process through which Korean residents living in Koryoin-dense areas develop perceptions of coexistence while experiencing changes in their local communities. In-depth interviews were conducted with nine long-term Korean residents, and the collected data were analyzed using conceptualization, categorization, and the axial coding paradigm from Strauss and Corbin’s (1998) coding procedures as an analytical framework. The causal conditions included the influx of Koryoin residents into the local community, the sharing of everyday living spaces with Koryoin residents, and experiences of contact with Koryoin residents. The contextual conditions included the concentration of Koryoin residents and the development of Koryoin commercial districts, attachment to one’s place of residence and continued residence, and prior perceptions of immigrants. The central phenomenon was identified as accepting the reality of living together despite discomfort. The intervening conditions included multicultural policies and institutional environments, community activities that enabled residents to get to know one another, and local networks connecting residents. Participants attempted to communicate, acknowledged differences in culture and ways of life, and participated in local activities as ways of building relationships. As a result, limited trust toward Koryoin residents, recognition of them as members of the local community, and conditional expectations for coexistence emerged, although everyday inconvenience and relational distance remained. These findings indicate that Korean residents’ perceptions of coexistence are continuously reconstructed as they adapt to changes in their local communities through repeated contact and relationship-building. Based on these findings, efforts to promote coexistence in Koryoin-dense areas should consider not only immigrants but also the lived experiences and needs of long-term Korean residents, while strengthening communication among residents, community participation, and local networks.
