This study aims to develop and preliminarily validate a scale for measuring citizens’ perceived identification with the police. Citizens’ perceived identification with the police refers to the extent to which citizens perceive the police organization and police officers as a group psychologically connected to themselves, rather than merely as an external law enforcement authority. Based on Sung’s Korean Social Identification Scale, this study modified the original items to fit the context of police-citizen relations. Survey data were collected from 500 citizens aged 20 to 69 in South Korea and analyzed through reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis. The results showed that citizens’ perceived identification with the police consists of three factors: group self-esteem, self-categorization, and group involvement. Two items originally included in the self-categorization factor showed low item-total correlations and failed to load on the intended factor; therefore, they were excluded from the final scale. The final scale consisted of 16 items: seven items for group self-esteem, five items for self-categorization, and four items for group involvement. The overall Cronbach’s α of the final scale was .877, indicating acceptable internal consistency. The confirmatory factor analysis also showed that the modified three-factor model improved the overall model fit, although some fit indices remained at a limited level. These findings suggest that citizens’ perceived identification with the police may be examined as a social-psychological construct potentially distinct from existing evaluative or normative concepts such as police trust, police legitimacy, and procedural justice. The significance of this study lies in its attempt to move beyond whether citizens judge the police as legitimate or fair, and to empirically examine the more intuitive and psychological dimension of how close citizens feel to the police as a social group. As a preliminary validation study, however, further research is needed to examine cross-validation, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and criterion-related validity using independent samples.
