The Effects of Schadenfreude and Moral Grandstanding on Perceived Effectiveness of Online Vigilantism: The Moderating Role of Perceived Effectiveness of the Criminal Justice System
Public support for online vigilantism has often been explained as a product of distrust in the criminal justice system. However, the fact that online vigilantism is also perceived as effective among individuals who trust the system suggests that this explanation alone is insufficient. Accordingly, this study identifies schadenfreude and moral grandstanding as psychological factors associated with perceived effectiveness of online vigilantism and examines whether their effects vary according to individuals' perceived effectiveness of the criminal justice system. A survey was conducted with 1,000 adults nationwide, and the data were analyzed using Model 1 of the PROCESS macro.
The results showed that schadenfreude and prestige seeking, a subdimension of moral grandstanding, were positively associated with perceived effectiveness of online vigilantism, but their interactions with perceived effectiveness of the criminal justice system were not statistically significant. In contrast, dominance seeking showed a significant interaction with perceived effectiveness of the criminal justice system, and this result remained consistent even after applying a multiple-comparison correction.
Johnson-Neyman analysis further indicated that the positive effect of dominance seeking on perceived effectiveness of online vigilantism became statistically significant only among respondents whose perceived effectiveness of the criminal justice system exceeded a certain level. These findings suggest that perceived effectiveness of online vigilantism cannot be fully explained by institutional distrust alone, and may also be associated with emotional satisfaction derived from others' misfortune, moral self-presentation, and the tendency to exert influence over others.
