Kim Seung-chul’s Interpretation of Shusaku Endo and the Construction of Eastern Theology ─ Focusing on Distance, Trace, and Pain ─
This study examines the continuity of “distance,” “trace,” and “pain” in Kim Seung-chul’s interpretation of Shusaku Endo and reconstructs the Eastern theology implicit in his work. For Kim, distance is a productive gap between Western Christianity and Japanese sensibility, while trace signifies an indirect form of divine presence amid absence and silence. Pain is the ethical and soteriological response to the suffering of the other. The study further reads Endo in dialogue with François Mauriac, Georges Bernanos, and Graham Greene. It argues that Endo creatively transformed Western Catholic literature through Japanese experiences of persecution, apostasy, embodiment, and weakness. Kim’s Eastern theology is thus understood not as a fixed system opposed to Western theology, but as a hermeneutical practice that translates Christian language within the East Asian lifeworld.
