The Censorship Regime and Media Space in 1930s East Asia ─ The Topology of Fukuji (Censorship Marks) in Chang Hyŏk-chu’s Aguido ─
This study proposes a new analytical methodology, termed the topology of censorship marks, for examining the censorship marks that appear in Chang Hyŏk-chu’s short story Aguido. It systematises these marks into five categories—perpetrator agency, economic exploitation, physical violence, state power, and the concealment of resistance organisations—and demonstrates empirically that their distributional density corresponds precisely to the narrative climax. This finding suggests that colonial censorship functioned as a form of authoritative reading, in which censors closely deciphered the narrative structure of the text. It also shows that the editorial philosophy of “Prose Art Theory” (Sanbun Geijutsuron) promoted by Kaizō strategically concentrated representations of violence and resistance in order to maximise aesthetic tension. Furthermore, the study elucidates the mechanism of a rhetoric of silence, whereby textual silences interact intertextually with critical articles published in the same issue to articulate suppressed truths. Ultimately, it argues that the censorship marks in Aguido function not only as key signifiers for understanding the censorship regime that governed the East Asian media space of the 1930s, but also as a code of solidarity.
