The Transformation of Early Modern Guidebook Conventions in Chōsen Ryokō Annaiki ─ Inherited Meishoki Practices and the Reorganization Wrought by the Railway as Medium ─ 『조선여행안내기』에 나타난 근세 안내기 형식의 변용 ― 명소기적 관습의 계승과 철도라는 매체가 만든 재편 ―
This paper examines the organizational structure and descriptive strategies of Chōsen Ryokō Annaiki(Travel Guide to Chōsen), published in 1934 by the Railway Bureau of the Government- General of Chōsen, using the generic conventions of early modern meishokiand meisho zueas an analytical baseline. While colonial-era travel guidebooks on Korea have been studied extensively from the perspectives of tourism policy, colonial representation, and historical geography, no attempt has been made to situate these texts within the genre history of guidebooks inherited from the early modern period. This study first identifies five axes of early modern guidebook convention and then analyzes the 1934 guide against them. Three findings emerge. First, in the guide, meishokicontent categories—history, customs, annual observances, historic sites, and place-origin legends—together with the practical framework of day-by-day model itineraries, are formally carried over yet recontextualized. Their descriptive gaze, however, is reversed: rather than guiding readers toward pleasures they themselves would join, the text explains an alien culture to Japanese metropolitan readers who do not know Korean. Second, categories absent from any early modern guidebook—administrative divisions, education, social work, and industry—are inserted in the manner of colonial administrative yearbooks, making the text a hybrid of travel guide and governance report. Third, the organizing principle of the whole is the railway network, with regional knowledge and landscape perception reorganized around the units of station names and the train window. Within this reorganization, however, the chapter “Ekimei Manroku” rediscovers premodern Korean travel culture—the post-station system, changseungmarkers, and roadside inns—embedded in the sinographic orthography and etymology of station names, revealing a double inheritance in which categorical reconfiguration and substantive continuity overlap. This hybridity results from three conditions that refracted long-standing guidebook conventions: the colonial “outer territory,” where a traveler’s act of photographing or sketching in fortified or port zones was subject to permission; the medium of the railway, which reorganized the units of movement and perception; and an official publisher that also owned the tourist infrastructure it described. Rather than concluding with the early modern period, the genre history of early modern guidebooks can be seen to continue—in refracted form—within the official guidebooks of the colony.
