Effects of a Korea-Japan Student Regional Problem-Solving Program ─ An Analysis Focused on Entrepreneurial Awareness and Grassroots Diplomacy ─
This study examines the differences in entrepreneurial perceptions between Korean and Japanese university students and the potential for fostering grassroots diplomacy, focusing on the “2026 Korea-Japan Regional Co-existence Glocal Startup Competition.” Data collection involved an online survey—comprising 25 items across five categories—administered to participating students prior to the event, followed by an analysis of reflective essays written by the participants after the competition concluded. The trend analysis revealed that Korean students showed relatively higher scores in areas such as entrepreneurial intention, attitude, and resilience to failure, whereas Japanese students demonstrated higher proficiency in region-oriented “glocal” startup capabilities and knowledge of the startup process. Furthermore, regarding entrepreneurial self-efficacy, it was found that the relative strengths of students from the two countries varied by sub-category, indicating a mutually complementary relationship. Text analysis of the reflection papers revealed several key elements. For Korean students, a shift in perspective was observed—moving from a focus on “technology” to a focus on the “needs of local residents.” In contrast, Japanese students showed a transition from a “passive attitude” to an “awareness of feasibility.” Based on these findings, a model for the formation of grassroots diplomacy can be proposed, involving a step-by-step progression through three stages: identifying common challenges, overcoming language barriers, and aiming for sustained relationships. However, as this is a pilot study based on a small, convenience sample and does not involve statistical testing, it is important to exercise caution regarding the interpretation and generalization of the results.
