The Gōkan Collection in the Old and Rare Materials Collection of Seoul National University Central Library : Its Potential for Academic Use
This paper examines the academic potential of the gōkan (合巻) collection held in the Old and Rare Materials Collection of Seoul National University Central Library. The collection houses approximately 2,900 items of Japanese classical books, among which roughly 800 kusazōshi (草双紙)—mostly gōkan—derive primarily from the former holdings of Sano Heiroku, a dealer with a background as a kyōka poet. These works remain in exceptionally good condition due to Seoul’s low-humidity climate, resulting in a collection of remarkably high quality. This study focuses on two distinctive features of the collection: the survival of shikake (仕掛, mechanical devices) and the use of usuzumi (薄墨, light-ink shading). Through case studies of Mukashi Moyō Gijō Hinagata and Unryū Kurō Tōtōden, it is shown that devices already lost in copies held by other institutions—such as the National Diet Library, Senshu University, and the National Institute of Japanese Literature—survive intact in the SNU copies, allowing the reconstruction of the authors’ original intent to conceal or reveal characters’ true identities and transformations. Case studies of usuzumi in Kantan Shokoku Monogatari, Nansō Satomi Hakkenden, Osana Genji Azuma no Hatsutabi, and Unryū Kurō Tōtōden further reveal, through comparison with copies held elsewhere, that light-ink shading was used to depict driving rain, beams of light, and vengeful or living spirits, and that even identical scenes show variation in how the shading was applied. These findings demonstrate that the gōkan collection in the Old and Rare Materials Collection contains numerous early or near-first printings, making it a first-rate primary source for the empirical study of the visual and material dimensions of late-Edo gesaku fiction.
