Media Appropriation in the Post-Fordist Era and the Alternative Audiovisual Economies of the Essay Film : Focusing on Craig Baldwin’s Tribulation 99
This paper argues that the contemporary image is no longer a closed circuit belonging to a single author, but a fluid fragment subject to cutting and reassembly: a kind of labour unit passing through a “copy-and-paste” circuit. This transformation resembles the post-Fordist industrial mode characterised by flexible production, modular assembly, and the global dispersal of production through outsourcing and subcontracting. At the same time, it runs formally parallel to the essay film, a form that proceeds by traversing heterogeneous media and intricately entangled networks of thought. The essay film may therefore seem to function as capitalism’s accomplice, the most typical expression of its contemporary logic-a critique that is not without warrant. Against this, the paper contends that it is precisely through appropriation, one of the essay film’s characteristic strategies, that the form comes to occupy the position of a spy: capable of dismantling the capitalist image economy from within. This position, however, is not automatic; not every act of appropriation attains it. Only when appropriation is combined with the informal image circuit that materially sustains it does the form turn into an alternative audiovisual economy that eludes the capitalist visual order. This is why the paper takes up Craig Baldwin, a filmmaker and archivist who has received little attention in Korean academia. Through an analysis of Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America (1991)-made by a filmmaker who runs his own archive, which is called Other Cinema-the paper examines the logic of this mutual dependence. What matters here is not whether a circuit lies inside or outside institutional bounds, but which discourse ultimately governs the images that circulate on it. Within this circuit, price attaches not to the image itself but to the archival labour of unearthing it and making it accessible, while value is determined not at the moment of transaction but in the moment of use, through mutual recognition within the community. The criterion governing access likewise shifts from the anonymous measure of ability to pay to the measure of relation, so that the exchange assumes a form of reciprocity that sidesteps the metrics of the market. The images circulating here are thus poor images in Hito Steyerl’s sense, slipping free of the myths of private ownership and originality. The paper theorises this condition by way of Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri’s concept of the common, and further shows that the alternative audiovisual economy so constituted is no utopian domain but a provisional, tactical coordinate-one that appears only fleetingly, within its tension with capital’s movement of recuperation.
