The Institutionalization and Social Functions of the Inexhaustible Storehouse (wujinzang, 無盡藏) in Medieval China : A Comparison of the Liang Dynasty and the Sanjie Movement
This article examines the institutionalization and social functions of the Inexhaustible Storehouse (wujinzang, 無盡藏) in medieval China by comparing two cases : the Liang-dynasty practice associated with Emperor Wu of Liang (梁武帝) Xiao Yan (蕭衍, 464-549), and the Sanjie movement (三階敎) of the Sui-Tang period. The term wujinzang originally belonged to the Buddhist vocabulary of inexhaustible merit, wisdom, and giving. In medieval China, however, it also came to designate arrangements through which donated resources were collected, preserved, and redistributed. This article therefore treats the wujinzang as a subject of Buddhist practice and institutional history, rather than as a doctrinal term alone. The Liang case is examined mainly through the Chu sanzang ji ji (出三藏記集) and the Guang hongming ji (廣弘明集). The former records a text titled Huangdi zao shi wujinzang ji (皇帝造十無盡藏記), while the latter preserves the account of the “thirteen kinds of inexhaustible storehouses” (十三種無盡藏) in connection with imperial Buddhist assemblies, release of living beings, giving, and relief. These materials suggest that the Liang wujinzang was formed within the field of imperial Buddhist policy and royal merit-making. Its institutional character was tied to the emperor’s religious authority, large-scale assemblies, and the organization of charitable practices under the symbolic framework of Buddhist kingship. The Sanjie case developed under different conditions. It was grounded in Xinxing’s (信行, 540-594) understanding of the age of decline and in the movement’s emphasis on universal reverence, repentance, and giving. Texts such as the Dasheng wujinzang fa (大乘無盡藏法) and the Dasheng fajie wujinzang fa shi (大乘法界無盡藏法釋) explain the wujinzang as a sustained practice of bodhisattva giving. Accounts related to the Huadu Monastery (化度寺) further indicate that donated resources were used for repairing monasteries, relieving the hungry and poor, and supporting ritual offerings. The Sanjie wujinzang thus combined doctrinal practice, lay donation, monastic space, and redistribution. Imperial supervision under Empress Wu and the investigation and redistribution of the treasury’s assets under Emperor Xuanzong show that the institution was repeatedly reshaped by state intervention. The state’s contemporaneous involvement in the Beitian yangbingfang (悲田養病坊) also indicates a broader expansion of governmental oversight over monastery-based relief. The comparison clarifies both the common ground and the differences between the two cases. Both translated the merit of giving into a durable form of resource management. Yet they differed in agency, sources of support, institutional location, patterns of redistribution, and political vulnerability. The Liang wujinzang was closely connected with imperial ritual and royal Buddhist policy, whereas the Sanjie wujinzang developed through communal participation and lay donations while remaining subject to periodic imperial supervision and state control. For this reason, the Sanjie institution acquired a broader social base but was also more exposed to state and ecclesiastical control. By analyzing these two cases together, this article argues that Buddhist giving in medieval China could become a concrete mechanism for communal resource formation, social relief, and religiously grounded redistribution.
