Philosophy is an intellectual activity that poses questions about oneself and the world and seeks answers. Philosophy is divided into philosophy as a study and philosophical practice. The philosophical practice encompasses four fields: philosophical counseling, philosophical education, philosophical arts of life, and leisure philosophy. A philosophical café is a subset of leisure philosophy and refers to a gathering where people meet at a café, library, or similar venue to freely discuss a specific topic. In this paper, I explore the necessity, significance, potential, and advantages of philosophical cafés. It examines the reasons for participating in philosophical cafés and their necessity, and seeks to identify their characteristics and full potential. To this end, in Section 2, I argue that philosophical cafés, as a form of leisure philosophy, are essential activities in our lives based on the following three grounds. First, because it is a gathering dedicated to contemplative activity—the very essence of happiness—it contributes more directly to a happy life than other forms of philosophical practice. Second, as an activity centered on dialogue—which is essential for humans, as social beings, to lead a fulfilling life—it is directly necessary for happiness. Third, since it is an activity focused on enjoying the act of philosophizing itself rather than on the ability or habit of philosophical thinking, it connects more directly to happiness; therefore, it is argued to be the most authentic form of philosophical practice. In Section 3, I argue that the future and potential for expansion of philosophical cafés are very positive, given that they are virtually unlimited in terms of time, space, target audience, and methods of operation, and can be easily linked with other fields. Philosophical cafés can be held at any places for an unspecified audience, but they can also be incorporated into classes, after-school programs, club activities, or even held in places such as the military or prisons. Philosophical cafés can be held on a regular or irregular basis, can be incorporated into other programs, and are open to a diverse range of participants across different age groups and professions. Furthermore, they can employ a variety of facilitation methods and be linked with other activities of philosophical practice.
