A Theological Study on the Identity of Human Existence after Death : The Applicability of Paul Ricoeur’s Narrative Identity Based on Christian Anthropology
This study aims to reexamine the problem of human identity after death from the perspective of Christian anthropology and to explore the applicability of Paul Ricoeur’s concept of narrative identity, taking Thomas Aquinas’s anthropology as its ontological foundation. Aquinas understands the human being as a substantial unity of soul and body and explains the ontological continuity of the same subject by affirming the subsistence of the separated soul after death. However, the separated soul does not constitute the complete state of the human person, and this account alone does not sufficiently explain how a person’s memories, actions, responsibilities, and relational history can continue to be attributed to that same self after death. To address this limitation, this study turns to Ricoeur’s concept of narrative identity. Ricoeur distinguishes personal identity in terms of sameness (idem) and selfhood (ipse) and understands narrative identity as the mediation of these two dimensions within time. The self maintains continuity through change by configuring memory, action, self-interpretation, promise and responsibility, and relationships with others into a coherent narrative of life. Ricoeur’s narrative identity, therefore, should not be understood as an alternative to Aquinas’s ontology, but rather as a complementary hermeneutical framework that elucidates the temporal, personal, and relational dimensions of identity that Aquinas does not fully explicate. Although Ricoeur’s theory of narrative identity does not directly address postmortem existence and therefore has limitations when applied to it, this study, on the basis of the ontological continuity of the same subject proposed by Aquinas, hermeneutically explores the possibility that the memories, self-understanding, and relational history formed during earthly life may continue to be attributed to the same subject after death. Furthermore, it considers the possibility that such identity may be relationally sustained in the memories of others and the community, and ultimately in the memory of God. Finally, this study proposes a Christian anthropological understanding in which the integral identity of the human person is brought to completion through the resurrection.
