This study aimed to explore the materiality of play emerging from the entangled relations between infants’ bodies and more-than-human beings from a posthuman perspective, moving beyond interpretations of infant play grounded in the developmentalist paradigm. To this end, play records, photographs, and the researcher’s reflective journals collected from the Gaon Class at Hanul Daycare Center were used as research data, and a diffractive reading of play was conducted through the lens of posthuman theses and concepts. The materiality of play identified from the “glowing data” that affected the researcher was interpreted through five key posthuman theses and concepts. First, cylindrical objects exercised agency as relational entities by eliciting infants’ bodily movements. Second, through intra-action with container objects, infants responded to the rhythms of materials and reconfigured ontological boundaries, moving beyond the notion of an isolated subject who merely uses objects as tools. Third, the material transformations and diffraction of plastic sheets interfered with infants’ sensory systems, generating microclimates and new ontological patterns. Fourth, collisions between boxes and infants’ bodies mobilized nonhuman physical forces, such as gravity and resistance, producing dynamic entanglements between bodies and materials. Fifth, through processes of sympoiesis with flexible materials such as scarves, infants emerged as generative beings who co-created worlds with others and with materials. These interpretations suggested that teachers’ play documentation, as one possible alternative to developmental interpretations of infant play, could be transformed from representing developmental achievements into a form of diffractive writing that attends to differences emerging through entanglements. Furthermore, the study reexamined the value of open spatiotemporal environments that respect the agency of materials, as well as the pedagogical significance of waiting. Finally, it argued that teachers can be understood as co-researchers and co-present participants who attend to and respond with the forces of materials.
