A Study on the Activities and Relations of the Craftsmen Who Made the Golden Seal and Golden Book for Prince Heungchin in 1910 - Focusing on a Comparative Analysis of Literature and Artifacts -
This paper focuses on the 1910 gold-bound document honoring Prince Heungchin, which is kept at the Seoul Museum of History, and the royal ritual records held in the Kyujanggak and Jangseogak. By comparing the artifacts and documents, it analyzes the production process of royal items in the Korean Empire, the activities of the craftsmen involved at each stage, and their relationships. Prince Heungchin’s appointment was an example of the Korean Empire expanding royal recognition to members of the royal family who were previously outside the main line. The organizational system for making the gold-bound document was the same as during the Joseon period, but such gold books were only made in the Korean Empire era. The production process was specialized into four stages, and the craftsmen involved were aware of each other from early on and collaborated closely. The findings can be summarized as follows. First, the metalwork involved brass craftsman Lee Soo-man (active 1898-1910) and brazier Jung Chi-jung (active 1903-1910), who worked together seven times during their careers. Second, the painting work was done by three painters—Seo Won-hee, Jeon Su-meok, and Yoon Seok-young—who collaborated across nine projects since 1886, helping each other fill in vermilion on the gold book, draw dragon patterns, and make imprint lines. Third, the bookbinding work was handled by folding screen maker Hwang Ki-cheol (active 1897-1910), who decorated the golden book, and cord maker Park Sung-yeop (active 1890-1910), who bound the pages together. Fourth, the casing work was done by wood craftsman Jeong Ki-jun (active 1899-1910) and lacquer craftsman Kim Man-heung (active 1890-1910), who made the inner and outer boxes to contain and protect the book seals. Through this, it has been shown that the 1910 golden seal & book for Prince Heungchin was a royal emblem representing the Korean Empire, created through a division of labor and collaboration among 24 craftsmen across 10 types of work.
