This paper aimed to examine the background to the formation of Seong Hon and Song Ikpil’s Eunajeon. as well as the narrative strategies revealed in it. Joseon adopted Confucian Neo-Confucianism as its governing ideology and sought to establish Confucian ethics. He compiled and distributed works such as Sohak and Samgang Haengsildo, and actively implemented policies that rewarded those who showed exceptional conduct in loyalty, filial piety, and chastity. Since Eunajeon was composed as a biography of a virtuous woman, with the purpose of describing Euna’s exemplary conduct to bring her into reward, it is important to examine the narrative strategy. Looking at the narrative strategy of Eunajeon, it employed methods such as emphasizing that, by her innate virtue, she strengthened it through later effort, and stressing the fact that she remained devoted and devoted to her husband even after his death. It emphasized, in particular, that virtue and chastity were applied only to women of the yangban class, but that Euna, a commoner, also practiced them. They also employed methods such as symbolizing the act of severing the fingers as a symbol of ritual burial, and strengthening the reliability of information by adopting the testimonies of those who directly saw and heard of Euna’s deeds. Thus, Eunajeon shows that it functions not only as a record of historical facts and an introduction to figures, but also as a strategic narrative intended for rewards.

본 논문은 성혼과 송익필의 <은아전> 성립 배경과 서술 전략을 고찰하고자 하였다. 조선은 유교 성리학을 통치 이념으로 삼아 유교 윤리를 정착시키고자 했다. 이를 위해 『소학』『삼강행실도』등을 편찬하여 보급했고, 충･효･열에 남다른 행적을 보인 사람에 대한 포상 정책을 적극 실시했던 것이다. 이 글은 열녀전인 <은아전>도 그 저술 배경으로 은아의 열행을 서술하여 포상 받게 하려는 목적하에 지어졌다는 것을 밝히고, 그 구체적인 서술 전략을 고찰하였다. 서술 전략을 보면, 천부적인 부덕에 후천적 노력으로 부덕을 강화했음을 부각하기, 남편이 죽은 후에도 변함없이 공경하는 마음을 갖고 수절한 사실 강조하기 등의 방식을 구사했다. 특히 부덕이나 수절은 양반 계층 여성들에게만 적용되었지만 양인인 은아도 행했다는 사실을 강조했다. 또한 단지(斷指)를 순장(殉葬) 행위의 상징으로 의미화하는 방식, 은아의 행적을 직접 보고 들은 사람들의 증언을 채택하여 정보 신뢰성을 강화하는 방식 등을 구사했다. 그리하여 <은아전>은 전이 역사적 사실 기록, 인물 알리기라는 기능뿐 아니라 포상 목적의 전략적 서술물로서 기능하고 있음을 보여준다.
