This study examines the nature and characteristics of Suk-Jae Yoon Haeng-Im’s historical writings in the late Joseon period from the perspective of Classical Chinese literature. It comprehensively investigates the historical prose contained in 󰡔Suk-Jae-Go󰡕 in order to examine the modes of historical writing and the characteristics of Yoon’s historical consciousness. The analysis shows that Yoon’s historical writings were developed through diverse prose forms, including supplementary historical accounts (Oesa 外史), prefaces, commemorative records, and miscellaneous essays. These writings commonly reveal an awareness of supplementing historical facts that were omitted or only briefly treated in official histories, as well as a critical approach to historical sources. They also demonstrate an evidential approach that combines textual sources with historical sites and epigraphic materials, together with a historical consciousness grounded in loyalty to the Ming dynasty and the principle of orthodox legitimacy. Furthermore, historical criticism and historical discourse (Saron 史論) concerning historical facts are organically integrated with the literary expression of Classical Chinese prose. Thus, Yoon’s historical writings may be understood as a complex form of historical prose that goes beyond the recording of facts by combining historical criticism, historical discourse, and the literary expression of Classical Chinese prose. In this respect, his writings represent an aspect of historical prose in the late Joseon period.

본고는 조선 후기 윤행임의 역사 저술을 대상으로, 그 성격과 특징을 한문학적 관점에서 검토하였다. 본고에서는 󰡔석재고󰡕에 수록된 역사 관련 산문 전반을 대상으로 역사 서술의 양상과 역사 인식의 특징을 종합적으로 검토하였다. 그 결과 윤행임의 역사 저술은 외사⋅서문⋅기문⋅잡저 등 다양한 산문 형식을 통해 전개되며, 정사에서 누락되거나 소략하게 다루어진 사실을 보완하고 역사 자료를 비판적으로 독해하려는 문제의식을 공통적으로 드러냄을 확인하였다. 또한 문헌과 유적⋅금석을 함께 활용하는 고증적 서술 태도와 대명의리 및 정통론에 기반한 역사 인식, 나아가 역사적 사실에 대한 비평과 사론의 전개가 산문적 형상화와 유기적으로 결합되어 있음을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 윤행임의 역사 저술은 사실의 기록을 넘어 역사 비평과 사론, 한문 산문의 표현성이 결합된 복합적 역사 산문으로서의 성격을 지니며, 조선후기 역사 산문의 한 양상을 보여준다고 할 수 있겠다.
