Yamazaki Ansai's Mystic Concordance Scholarship and the World of Shinto - Ansai's Perception of 'Kei' and Japan as a Divine Nation
This study examines the overall picture of Yamazaki Ansai’s scholarship, focusing on his perspective on learning. Examining Ansai's Neo-Confucianism and Shintoism separately fails to clearly reveal the complete picture of his intellectual system. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate what underlies and connects the multilayered scholarship of both Confucianism and Shinto in Ansai’s thought. Suika Shinto, initiated by Ansai, and the worldview it constructed served as a methodological framework to explain Japan as a 'divine land'(shinkoku). The ultimate purpose of Suika Shinto lay in synthesizing and transmitting to posterity the 'Way of Japan,' which had been passed down since antiquity in a nation born of the 'heavenly covenant coeval with heaven and earth'. Based on this, Ansai sought to demonstrate empirically and factually that Japan is a country created by the gods, thereby establishing its position at the center of the world.
