This paper examines Yulgok Yi I’s understanding of Laozi’s concept of De 德 in his Suneon 醇言 and discusses its philosophical implications. Yulgok defines and explains Laozi’s Dao 道 and De in terms of the Neo-Confucian concepts of Li 理 and Xing 性. This paper argues that Yulgok’s interpretation of Laozi’s De as Neo-Confucian xing successfully captures an important feature of Laozi’s philosophy and constitutes a meaningful development in the history of Laozi studies. It also shows that Yulgok’s interpretation is closely related to Neo-Confucian doctrine, “One principle and yet various manifestations” (liyi fenshu 理一分殊) and his own thesis, “Li passes through [universally] and Qi gets limited [to the particulars]” (litong kiguk/litong qiju 理通氣局). This paper further argues that Yulgok’s Suneon reveals an ethical dilemma inherent in Neo-Confucian metaphysics. In Neo-Confucianism, Li is not a conscious or intentional agent and, in itself, cannot be morally judged in the same way as human actions or intentions. Yet it is also regarded as “purely good and without evil” (純善無惡) and as the highest ethical principle. Since xing is the concrete manifestation of li in individual beings, it inevitably inherits this tension. By comparing the Neo-Confucian concepts of Li and Xing with Laozi’s impersonal Dao of Ziran 自然 and Wuwei 無爲, and with De as the concrete manifestation of Dao, Yulgok exposes this philosophical dilemma. Yulgok appears to address this problem through the concept of Benran 本然. Although the term itself is not frequently used in the Suneon, the idea of Benran operates throughout the text as a normative standpoint from which the potentially amoral paradox of Ziran can be resolved. In this sense, Benran functions as a conceptual device that allows Yulgok to distinguish the natural course of reality from the original and proper state of Li, Xing, Dao, and De.
