This study examines the temporal structure and practical significance of zhongji (終吉) in the line statements of the Zhouyi. Although zhongji is generally understood as “auspicious in the end” or “ultimately auspicious,” insufficient attention has been paid to the temporal function of zhong (終) when combined with ji (吉) and to the different relationships between the expressions preceding zhongji and the final judgment. Based on the classical Chinese text, this study examines nine line statements in which zhong directly modifies ji. Zhu Xi’s interpretations are examined with reference to Yeokju Juyeok Bonui (譯註 周易本義), while Wang Bi’s interpretations are compared and Cheng Yi’s interpretations are consulted where necessary. The Nine in the Third Place of Hexagram 15, Qian (謙), is excluded from the direct cases because Zhu Xi interprets the phrase as a combination of youzhong (有終) and ji (吉). The analysis shows that the relationship between the expressions preceding zhongji and the final judgment cannot be reduced to a single process structure. The Nine in the Second Place of Xu (需) combines a statement of situation with a divinatory judgment, while the Top Six of Xu and the Initial Six of Song (訟) exhibit relatively clear conditional and causal relations. The Six in the Third Place of Song, the Initial Six of Gu (蠱), and the Six in the Fifth Place of Bi (賁) display conditional or concessive relations. The Nine in the Fourth Place of Lü (履) and the Top Nine of Jiaren (家人) have the character of final evaluations of conduct or attitude. In the Nine in the Third Place of Ding (鼎), by contrast, temporal development through a change of state is directly expressed in the line statement. Despite these differences, the nine cases share the lexical temporality by which zhong places ji in the final phase. Since the judgment zhongji is already stated in the line text, the judgment itself is not deferred. Rather, zhong distinguishes the phase in which ji applies from the present state or evaluation and locates it in the final phase. Self-adjustment should therefore not be presupposed as a uniform element in all nine cases, but may be interpreted as a practical significance in those cases where the grounds for response are supported by the line text, the Xiaoxiang Commentary (小象傳), or later commentaries. Accordingly, the temporal distinctiveness of zhongji lies not in a uniform sequence of events but in the function of zhong in locating ji in the final phase, while its practical significance must be interpreted according to the conditions and relationships established in each individual case.
