Confucius is generally regarded as a virtue ethicist. I argue, however, that “virtue ethics” does not fully capture the scope of Confucian ethics. Accordingly, this article offers a new interpretation based on Joel J. Kupperman’s character ethics. For Kupperman, character is a normal pattern of thought and action that emerges over time, reflecting how a life is integrated in a certain direction through one’s concerns and commitments. Rather than focusing on how excellently a person possessed particular virtues such as honesty, courage, and generosity, Confucius attended to how dispositions, motives, purposes, and attitudes combined to constitute character as a whole. Confucian character can thus be understood as an ongoing process of committing oneself to the Way (道) and continually shaping one’s judgment, desires, and direction of life. Confucius’s evaluations of various human types likewise emphasize the fundamental concerns and commitments guiding their lives rather than their attainment of particular virtues. Although objections may be raised against interpreting Confucian ethics as character ethics, I argue that they are not compelling. Naming Confucian ethics “character ethics” may therefore constitute an act of rectifying names (正名) that more accurately reveals the core of Confucius’s thought.
