This study examines the compilation motives and musical thought of the Akhakgwebeom by analyzing its three prefaces and epilogues: the Seongjong (1493), Gwanghae (1610), and Yeongjo (1743) editions. The Seongjong Edition defined music as a cosmic and educational tool, aiming to complete national music institutions. The Gwanghae Edition reflected an urgent effort to reconstruct state rituals and music severed by the Japanese Invasions. The Yeongjo(英祖) Edition restored aak (court music) through the discovery of ancient stone chimes, expressing cultural pride as a “Little China”(小中華) and inheriting royal traditions. In conclusion, while sharing a framework of Chinese civilization and King Sejong's achievements, these texts carry unique significance: Seong Hyun(成俔) advanced universal music theory, Lee Jeong-gu recorded wartime practical restoration, and King Yeongjo embodied royal legitimacy and cultural renaissance through ritual music.
