This study traces the evolutionary trajectory of Korean alternative history (alt-history) fiction as a public history text that reflects popular historical consciousness, and critically examines the clashing manifestations of imperialist expansionist desires embedded in the popular cultures of three East Asian nations (South Korea, China, and Japan). Whereas Western alt-history fiction has functioned as a “dystopian counter-memory” that warns against the violence of totalitarianism and exposes the contradictions of its own political systems, Korean texts are characterized by a utopian longing to compensate for real-world geopolitical defeat through overwhelming military force and bureaucratic systems projected onto imagined spaces. This paper analyzes how Korean alt-history fiction has evolved through successive phases: from the transplantation of imperialist propaganda in 1941, to the rise of ultranationalist military narratives in the 2000s, to the bureaucratic state-reengineering of the web novel ecosystem in the 2010s (capitalist realism), and finally to the constitutional monarchy fantasy of legacy media. Through this analysis, the paper argues that underlying these texts is a yearning for an “empire never experienced,” one gestated by state-led, defensively nationalist history education. This constitutes a profound contradiction in which the victims of colonial rule reproduce and internalize the very imperialist violence of their oppressors. Furthermore, this study compares Korea’s imagined imperial projects with analogous texts from Japan and China. Korean expansionism collides head-on in the virtual realm with Japanese right-wing historical revisionism (the kaso senki, or fictional war chronicle genre), which repudiates postwar democratic education and embellishes a criminal past, and with China’s ultranationalist narratives, which seek to overcome the trauma of the “century of humiliation” (bainian guochi) and consummate a Sinocentric hegemony (Pax Sinica). This comparison reveals that East Asian alt-history fiction has devolved from a minor subgenre into a “narrative battlefield” where exclusive nationalisms clash in open confrontation. Ultimately, this paper calls upon the historical academy to step forward as an intellectual agent that communicates with the public and cultivates a healthy, alternative historical imagination within a public history space increasingly contaminated by blind expansionism.
