A Comparative Analysis of AI and Digital Technology Utilization Levels in the ESG Management of Tourism Enterprises
This study aims to compare and analyze the level and structure of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology use in ESG management across different types of tourism enterprises. Drawing on the 2025 ESG disclosure reports of six representative firms from the hotel, airline, travel, and casino/integrated resort sectors, this study employs content analysis to systematically identify technology utilization practices. Building on an integrated theoretical framework that combines digital transformation theory, the resource-based view (RBV), and dynamic capabilities theory, this study proposes multidimensional evaluation criteria and a five-stage AI-ESG utilization level model. The findings indicate that AI and digital technologies are closely integrated with ESG management, functioning not merely as supportive tools but as core mechanisms that enable firms to implement and manage their ESG practices. Marked differences were observed across industry types. Airlines showed the highest level of integration, with AI and digital technologies embedded across all ESG dimensions, whereas the hotel and casino and integrated resort sectors exhibited function-oriented utilization centered on operational efficiency and customer experience. The travel sector, in turn, relied on platform-based, indirect utilization aimed at guiding customer choices. Furthermore, differences in utilization levels were driven not by the mere adoption of technology but by the degree of organizational integration and strategic alignment. This study contributes to the literature by presenting an integrated analytical framework that links ESG and digital transformation, and by revealing the structural role of AI and digital technologies as key enablers of ESG implementation in tourism enterprises. It also offers practical implications for corporate strategy and for policy-making on digital ESG transformation.
