Beyond Opposites : The Historical Evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Social Irresponsibility
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) are important concepts for understanding the relationship between business and society, yet their evolving definitions and dimensions have created persistent ambiguity regarding their relationship. This study reviews the historical development of CSR and CSI and compares their defining characteristics to clarify their conceptual boundaries. CSR is shown to have evolved from notions of social obligation towards governance- and management-oriented conceptualisations, whereas CSI developed from moral and normative concerns into a multidimensional construct encompassing stakeholder harm, intentionality, illegality, responsibility attribution, rectification, and contextual evaluation. The analysis shows that CSR evolved primarily through the expansion and integration of corporate responsibilities, reflecting a predominantly prospective logic, whereas CSI developed through the specification, attribution, and evaluation of harmful corporate conduct, reflecting a stronger evaluative and retrospective logic. The comparison identifies both convergence and divergence between the two concepts and suggests that CSR and CSI should be understood as distinct yet related constructs rather than opposite ends of a single continuum. The study synthesises their historical development and defining dimensions into a comparative conceptual framework, contributing to greater conceptual clarity and more consistent theorising and empirical measurement.
