This study examines the effect of impairment loss recognition on corporate tax avoidance among firms listed on the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) and the Korea Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (KOSDAQ) market. While prior studies have primarily investigated impairment losses from the perspectives of earnings management, value relevance, and accounting conservatism, relatively little attention has been devoted to the relationship between impairment loss recognition and corporate tax avoidance. To address this gap, this study investigates whether firms recognizing impairment losses exhibit different levels of tax avoidance from those that do not. Tax avoidance is measured using Book-Tax Differences (BTD), a widely adopted proxy for corporate tax avoidance in the accounting literature. In addition to the overall recognition of impairment losses, this study further distinguishes between tangible asset impairment losses and intangible asset impairment losses to examine whether the effects differ by asset type. The empirical analysis is conducted using multiple regression models after controlling for firm-specific characteristics, including firm size, leverage, foreign ownership, profitability, accruals, as well as industry and year fixed effects. The empirical results indicate that firms recognizing impairment losses exhibit significantly lower levels of tax avoidance than firms that do not recognize impairment losses. Furthermore, both tangible asset impairment loss recognition and intangible asset impairment loss recognition are negatively associated with tax avoidance. However, when both types of impairment losses are simultaneously included in the regression model, no statistically significant difference is observed between the two asset categories. These findings suggest that the recognition of impairment losses itself, rather than the type of impaired asset, is systematically associated with lower levels of corporate tax avoidance. This study contributes to the accounting literature by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between impairment loss recognition and corporate tax avoidance. The findings also imply that impairment loss recognition may serve as an informative indicator of firms' financial reporting characteristics and tax reporting behavior. Accordingly, this study provides useful implications for researchers, investors, auditors, and other stakeholders seeking to better understand firms' reporting incentives and tax avoidance practices.
