This study examines the structural relationships among absorptive capacity, manufacturing flexibility, and operational performance in Korean manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Specifically, it investigates the relationship between potential and realized absorptive capacity, their effects on manufacturing flexibility and operational performance, and the mediating role of manufacturing flexibility. Data were collected through an online survey of 276 employees working at Korean manufacturing SMEs. Preliminary analyses were conducted using SPSS 23.0, and the measurement and structural models were tested using AMOS 23.0. The results show that potential absorptive capacity has a significant positive effect on realized absorptive capacity and that both dimensions of absorptive capacity have significant positive effects on manufacturing flexibility. Manufacturing flexibility, in turn, has a significant positive effect on operational performance. Realized absorptive capacity has a significant positive direct effect on operational performance, whereas the direct effect of potential absorptive capacity is not statistically significant. Realized absorptive capacity partially mediates the relationship between potential absorptive capacity and manufacturing flexibility. Furthermore, manufacturing flexibility fully mediates the relationship between potential absorptive capacity and operational performance and partially mediates the relationship between realized absorptive capacity and operational performance. These findings indicate that external knowledge generates operational value when its acquisition and assimilation are followed by transformation and exploitation and when the resulting knowledge is translated into flexible adjustments to production resources and operating practices. This study extends absorptive capacity research beyond innovation-related outcomes by examining manufacturing flexibility and operational performance and by clarifying the distinct and sequential roles of potential and realized absorptive capacity. From a managerial perspective, the findings highlight the importance of establishing organizational routines for internalizing and applying external knowledge while strengthening manufacturing flexibility to improve quality, cost, delivery, and productivity in manufacturing SMEs.

본 연구는 국내 중소 제조기업을 대상으로 흡수역량, 제조유연성 및 운영성과 간의 구조적 관계를 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 구체적으로 잠재적 흡수역량이 실현적 흡수역량으로 이어지는 관계를 확인하고, 두 흡수역량이 제조유연성과 운영성과에 미치는 영향과 제조유연성의 매개역할을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 국내 중소 제조기업 재직자를 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실시하였으며, SPSS 23.0과 AMOS 23.0을 통해 구조방정식 모형 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 잠재적 흡수역량은 실현적 흡수역량에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 잠재적 흡수역량과 실현적 흡수역량은 모두 제조유연성에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 제조유연성은 운영성과에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미쳤다. 넷째, 실현적 흡수역량은 운영성과에 직접적인 정(+)의 영향을 미쳤으나, 잠재적 흡수역량은 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 다섯째, 잠재적 흡수역량이 제조유연성에 미치는 관계에서 실현적 흡수역량의 매개효과가 확인되었다. 마지막으로 제조유연성은 잠재적 흡수역량과 운영성과 간 관계를 완전매개하였으며, 실현적 흡수역량과 운영성과 간 관계를 부분매개하였다. 이러한 결과는 외부 지식의 획득과 동화가 변환과 활용으로 이어지고, 이를 바탕으로 생산자원과 운영방식을 유연하게 조정할 때 중소 제조기업의 품질, 원가, 납기 및 생산성 측면의 운영성과가 향상될 수 있음을 보여준다. 본 연구는 흡수역량 연구의 성과 변수 범위를 혁신성과 중심의 논의에서 제조유연성과 운영성과의 영역으로 확장하고, 흡수역량을 세분화하여 경로를 구체화했다는 점에서 학술적 기여가 가능하다. 실무적으로는 환경 변화 속에서 중소 제조기업이 경쟁력 확보를 위해 필요한 흡수역량 내재화 전략과 제조유연성 제고의 필요성을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
