Structural Relationships between Compliance Management and Corporate Performance : Focusing on the Sequential Indirect Effects of ESG Consulting Utilization and Governance Activities
ESG regulation has increased the importance of compliance management for legal and ethical risk control. This study examines the structural relationships among compliance management, ESG consulting utilization, governance activities, and perceived corporate performance, including their sequential indirect effect. Compliance management is treated as an internal foundation, consulting utilization as the use of external advice and regulatory knowledge, and governance activities as the operation of decision, oversight, and accountability mechanisms. The Compliance→Consulting direction follows the resource-based and absorptive-capacity perspectives, but the reverse direction remains plausible. All hypothesized paths and the sequential indirect effect were significant. Because all constructs were assessed by the same respondents at one point in time, the findings are interpreted as model-based associations rather than objective effect sizes, temporal precedence, causal direction, or evidence of superiority over an alternative model. The study addresses the fragmented treatment of compliance, consulting, and governance by distinguishing their functional positions in one framework. Institutional theory explains external pressure, the resource-based view explains the internal compliance foundation, absorptive capacity links external knowledge use with governance activities, and agency and stakeholder theories explain the governance–performance relationship. Compliance management and governance activities are conceptually separated by their targets and functions, while HTMT provides supplementary empirical support. ESG consulting utilization is specified as a provisional unidimensional construct because its four indicators share the referent of external ESG and compliance expertise; this does not establish a standardized scale. ULMC checks potential method variance but does not resolve endogeneity or common-source perceptual bias. Future studies should use longitudinal, cross-lagged, multi-source designs, objective consulting records, audited financial indicators, and external ESG assessments.
