This article examines Molly Sweeney through James J. Gibson’s ecological psychology, focusing on direct perception and affordance. Rather than interpreting Molly’s tragedy as the failure to adapt to restored vision, it argues that she already inhabited a coherent ecological world before surgery through embodied engagement with her environment. Her blindness constitutes a complete perceptual system developed through ecological attunement rather than sensory deficiency. The restoration of sight disrupts this established perception-action system, resulting in affordance collapse and ecological disorientation. By proposing ecological attunement and affordance collapse as complementary analytical concepts, this article reinterprets the play as a critique of ocularcentrism, demonstrating that perception emerges from the relational organization of body and environment rather than from vision alone.

브라이언 프리엘의『몰리 스위니』는 시력을 회복한 여성이 오히려 세계를 상실하는 역설을 그린다. 본 논문은 제임스 J. 깁슨의 생태심리학, 특히 직접지각과 어포던스 개념을 바탕으로 수술 이전과 이후 몰리의 지각 세계를 분석한다. 몰리는 시각이 없어도 몸과 환경의 관계 속에서 생태적 조율을 이루며 안정된 세계에 거주하지만, 수술 이후 새롭게 획득한 시각은 기존의 지각-행위 체계를 교란하여 어포던스의 붕괴와 생태적 방향 상실을 초래한다. 작품의 비극은 시력 회복의 실패가 아니라 시각을 지각의 기준으로 강요하는 시각중심주의의 실패임을 논증한다.
