This paper examines W.B. Yeats’s “The Road at My Door” and “The Stare’s Nest by My Window” through Giorgio Agamben’s concept of potentiality. Previous studies have primarily interpreted Yeats’s “Meditations in Time of Civil War” in terms of the relationship between political engagement and artistic autonomy. In contrast, this paper focuses on the relationship between potentiality and actualization, arguing that potentiality, without being fully exhausted in a single actualization, persists and takes different poetic forms in the two poems. “The Road at My Door” represents a potentiality that is not immediately actualized through the contrast between Yeats’s envy of the soldiers’ vitality and the fact that this potential for action does not translate into direct participation in the violence of war. In “The Stare’s Nest by My Window,” this structure of potentiality takes a different poetic form through the collapsing wall, the empty house, and the persistence of life and the possibility of a new dwelling within the ruins. In both poems, potentiality is not completed as a single actual result but continues and transforms in different poetic forms without being exhausted by actualization. This paper therefore interprets Yeats’s response to the Irish Civil War not as political disengagement or passive inaction, but as a poetic mode in which an actualization does not completely exhaust other possibilities within historical violence. By applying Agamben’s concept of potentiality to Yeats’s Civil War poems, this paper sheds new light on the relationship between historical reality and poetic creation beyond the binary opposition between action and inaction.

본 논문은 조르조 아감벤의 잠재성 개념을 바탕으로 W.B. 예이츠의 ｢내 집 앞의 길｣과 ｢내 창가의 찌르레기 둥지｣를 분석한다. 기존 연구는 예이츠의 내전기 시편을 주로 현실 참여와 예술적 자율성의 관계 속에서 해석해 왔다. 이에 비해 본 논문은 두 작품을 행위 가능성과 현실화의 관계에 주목하여, 하나의 현실적 행위로 완전히 소진되지 않는 잠재성이 서로 다른 시적 형상으로 지속되고 변형되는 과정으로 이해한다. ｢내 집 앞의 길｣은 병사들의 활력에 대한 선망과 전쟁에 대한 직접적인 행동 사이의 간극을 통해, 행위 가능성이 폭력적 현실화로 즉각 전환되지 않고 잠재성으로 지속되는 양상을 형상화한다. ｢내 창가의 찌르레기 둥지｣에서는 이러한 잠재성의 구조가 무너지는 벽과 빈 집, 그리고 그 안에서 지속되는 생명과 새로운 거처의 가능성을 통해 다른 시적 형상으로 나타난다. 두 작품에서 잠재성은 하나의 현실적 결과로 완성되는 것이 아니라, 현실화와의 관계 속에서도 완전히 소진되지 않은 채 서로 다른 형태로 지속되고 변형된다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 예이츠의 내전기 시편을 정치적 비개입이나 수동적 정지의 관점에서 규정하기보다, 역사적 폭력 속에서도 하나의 현실화가 다른 가능성을 완전히 소진하지 않는 시적 방식으로 해석한다. 나아가 본 논문은 아감벤의 잠재성 개념을 예이츠의 ｢내전기의 사색｣에 적용함으로써, 행동과 비행동의 이분법을 넘어 역사적 현실과 시적 창조의 관계를 새롭게 조명한다.
