This article examines the relationship between violence and civilization in W.B. Yeats’s late war poems, “Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen” and “Meditations in Time of Civil War”, to explore his cyclical philosophy of history. Previous scholarship has primarily interpreted these poems as responses to the Irish War of Independence and the Civil War, elegies for the decline of the Anglo-Irish Ascendancy, or reflections on the crisis of art and tradition. This study argues instead that the two poems should be read as consecutive stages in Yeats’s historical thought, revealing violence not merely as a destructive force or a direct cause of the formation and dissolution of civilization, but as a historical condition implicated in both processes. “Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen” depicts the collapse of civilization under revolutionary violence, exposing the fragility of art, order, and cultural values. In contrast, “Meditations in Time of Civil War” reconsiders the origins of civilization by showing how violence is implicated in the historical formation of cultural order while simultaneously anticipating renewed destruction. Together, the two poems trace a cyclical movement from destruction to formation and finally to the anticipation of another cycle of collapse. This article argues that Yeats’s late war poetry moves beyond its immediate political context to explore history as a recurring process of the formation and dissolution of civilization. It further demonstrates that reading the two poems as a continuous development in Yeats’s historical thought opens a new interpretation of the discourse of civilization in his late poetry.

본 논문은 W.B. Yeats의 후기 전쟁시인 「1919년」(“Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen”)과 「내전기의 명상」(“Meditations in Time of Civil War”)을 중심으로 폭력과 문명의 관계를 분석하고, 이를 통해 예이츠의 순환적 역사철학을 고찰한다.
